A 22-year-old man has been charged over the death of a 12-year-old boy after a boating accident on St Bathans' Blue Lake on Boxing Day 2015.

Jack Martin died after being struck by a passing boat while riding a biscuit behind another boat.

A Central Otago man will appear in the Alexandra District Court on January 12 to face a charge of operating a ship in a manner which caused unnecessary danger or risk to any other person, under the Maritime Transport Act.

However, the boy's father, Neil Martin, has told Fairfax he's "not happy" that charges had been laid.

"We don't agree with it [charges] and we'll never agree with it. I'm really angry.

"It was an accident. It was just one of those things ... the perfect storm. Everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong. We'll be supporting the young fellow and what he's got to go through."

The maximum penalty is a one-year jail term or a fine of up to $10,000.
