Police have charged a man after a Gisborne dairy worker was threatened with a "long sharp" weapon.

Police say the Huxley Road Dairy was robbed about 6.15am on Saturday when a man threatened the shop worker and left with items.

The diary's worker chased the man from the shop and was not injured.

Police shortly after arrested a 17-year-old on Saturday night using dogs and "some excellent forensic and detective work" to track him down, they said in a statement.

The man will face Gisborne District Court on Monday accused of aggravated robbery.
