A man has been arrested over the killing of a sea lion on Otago Peninsula in November.

The 52-year-old has been charged with wilful mistreatment of an animal under the Animal Welfare Act.

He is due to appear in Dunedin District Court on Friday.

Police say the arrest follows an investigation it conducted jointly with the Department of Conservation and the Dunedin Sea Lion Trust.

On November 5, an 11-month-old female sea lion pup named Rua was found shot dead on a beach near Portobello.
