NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 26/05/2016

Police have confirmed a 31-year-old man has been charged with the murder of "bright, bubbly" Christchurch woman Renee Duckmanton.

Ms Duckmanton, a 22-year-old sex worker, was last seen on Peterborough and Manchester streets in the city's red light district on Saturday night.

The following day her body was found on the side of a road near Rakaia River about 60km southwest of Christchurch.

Police say investigators collected enough evidence to make an arrest on Thursday.

They have seized a number of vehicles across Christchurch and are also examining four residential addresses.

Police are appealing to the public for sightings of a silver Audi around Manchester St on May 14 from about 8pm, or around Rakaia on May 15 between 6pm and 8pm.

They also want to speak with occupants of a light-coloured vehicle seen on Main Rd, Rakaia at about 7.40pm on May 15.

Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney said police had reason to believe Ms Duckmanton's death was linked to her sex work.

"It is important that we acknowledge the continued victimisation of the women working on Manchester Street, and police will be working with other agencies to consider what measures can be put in place to address this," he said.

Ms Duckmanton's family described her as "a bright, bubbly, goofy young woman, who was very kind and trusting".

"Renee was deeply loved by her family and many friends and she will be greatly missed," they said in a statement.

The accused will appear in Christchurch District Court on Friday.
