Man crashes into Masterton petrol station

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 16/07/2016

A man fleeing police has crashed into a Masterton petrol station, hitting a bowser and support beam and causing the forecourt roof to collapse.

The damage to the Caltex station in High Street happened on Sunday morning and the man subsequently fled.

There did not appear to be any other people on the forecourt and the service station worker was not hurt, a police spokeswoman says.

Before he crashed into the station, police had been chasing him after he left his home following reports of a disturbance.

"The man appears to have misjudged the turn, mounted the kerb, and driven into a petrol bowser and forecourt support beam," police said in a statement.

"The roof of the forecourt subsequently partially collapsed."

The crash did not result in any petrol leak.

The man has not yet been found but police say they know who he is.
