A man is dead after a car crashed into a laundromat during a police pursuit in south Auckland.

A police car spotted the Honda doing burnouts on Mangere Road in Otahuhu at about 3am on Thursday, Inspector Kerry Watson told reporters at the scene.

Officers tried to pull it over but it fled at "a great rate of knots", he said.

About 30 seconds after police lost the fleeing car in a short pursuit, it was found crashed into a laundromat at the major intersection of Mangere and Walmsley Roads.

A passenger in the vehicle died at the scene, while the driver was taken to Middlemore Hospital with serious injuries, Insp Watson said.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified and police are investigating the crash.

Auckland Transport says the intersection is closed and is warning drivers to avoid the area.

It is not expected to reopen until noon.
