Man dies in West Coast river

A Christchurch man who went to cool off in a West Coast river after being in hot pools has died.

Christchurch man Ben Gourdie was in hot pools with a group in Tyco Gorge near Jacksons when he went into Taipo River to cool off on Saturday night, Senior Sergeant Stu Koefoed says.

The group the man was with activated a personal locator beacon just before midnight and the 29-year-old's body was later found in the gorge.

His death has been referred to the coroner.

The area, in the West Coast, is a popular tramping spot that features hot pools.
