A man is due to appear in New Plymouth District Court after he allegedly fired a crossbow during a family dispute in Okato.

The 39-year-old was arrested about 2am on Sunday, after the armed offenders squad entered the home he was holed up in for nearly ten hours using tear gas.

Police were called to the Taranaki township just after 4pm on Saturday, when they received reports of a crossbow being fired during a domestic incident.

No one was injured, however the man would not leave the house and verbally threatened police.

Police stormed the house when negotiations failed.

He faces charges of assault with a weapon and threatening to kill.
