A man accused of mowing down and killing a New Zealand cyclist and fleeing the scene in Melbourne has briefly faced a court.

Matthew O'Connor, 27, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday charged with driving offences, including culpable driving and dangerous driving causing death.

Police will allege O'Connor, from Heidelberg, was driving a Holden Rodeo on Barkly Street in West Footscray on Thursday afternoon when he hit a cyclist and a parked car near the intersection of Argyle Street.

It will be further alleged O'Connor parked his car after the crash and ran off.

The cyclist, a 54-year-old New Zealand man who had Australian residency, died at the scene.

O'Connor was not required to speak during the brief hearing before Magistrate Ross Betts.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the same court on Tuesday.
