© TVNZ/ Westpac Helicopter A man has died after falling down a bank while having his photo taken in a rural area of the South Island.

The 47-year-old fell 30m down a bank and hit a tree off Rakaia Gorge Road near Windwhistle, inland from Christchurch, on Sunday afternoon.

Darfield Senior Constable Andy Grant told NZ Newswire it appears the Christchurch man lost his balance and fell over backwards while having his photo taken by a friend.

He says the man fell down a grass embankment 400m from the Rakaia Gorge and hit a tree.

The man had been travelling home from nearby Ashburton with two friends when the group pulled over at a rest area to take photos.

Sen Const Grant said the man's friends were traumatised and shocked and were being assisted by Victim Support.
