A 26-year-old Canadian man has been arrested at Auckland International Airport and charged with importing $8 million worth of methamphetamine hidden inside a footstool.

The man, who had been living in Auckland, was stopped trying to leave the country on Friday.

Customs searched the package, declared as an ornate footstool, and found eight kilograms of the drug hidden inside.

The man has been charged with importing a class A drug and is yet to appear in court, Customs says.

The package, sent from the US weighed about 50kg. The fibreglass and concrete block inside had decorative mirrors and beads attached to the surface.

Inside were 18 plastic bags filled with methamphetamine.
