An incident where man had a shotgun held to his head by gang members in Whakatane is being investigate by police.

On January 17 at the intersection of Churchill Street and Lord Cobham Avenue, a 33-year-old local man was driving home from work with his child in the car when he was cut off by a silver four-door sedan.

Three men, all of them wearing bandanas over their faces, confronted him, and demanded to know what he was doing in that neighbourhood.

One of the men then pulled out a double barrelled shotgun and held it to the victim's head, before the group got back in their car and left.

Police are investigating whether this is involved in the shooting at the funeral in the same area on the same day.
