A man has been airlifted to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition after crashing into a fence and being impaled by a post.

The crash occurred on Kidd Road in Karaka, south of Auckland, just before 5pm on Monday, police say.

During the collision a fence post came through the windscreen of the car and impaled the 21-year-old driver, a Fire Service spokesman said.

He said the man was stabilised inside the wreck as fire crews waited for the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter to arrive before they cut him free so he could be flown to hospital.
