A young man has appeared in court charged over a fatal stabbing in Ashburton.

The 23-year-old was granted interim name suppression when he appeared in Christchurch District Court on Wednesday, accused of murdering Tainui James Wano.

Police allege officers found the 25-year-old's body at a house in the suburb of Netherby after they were called to the property on Tuesday night.

Judge David Saunders granted an application for interim name suppression until the accused's next court appearance at the High Court at Timaru on October 4.

There was no application for bail and the 23-year-old was remanded in custody.

A scene examination at the McDonald Street house is being carried out.
