A 44-year-man is in custody after a suspicious item was found in the foyer of Wellington Central Police Station.

Police say the NZ Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal team rendered the item safe with a series of small, controlled explosions.

Cordons have been lifted and people who were evacuated from a number of buildings on Tuesday afternoon have been allowed to return.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, including further examination of the item and the scene.

Police say the station's front counter will be closed while this is completed and the scene is cleared, but all other policing functions will be operating as normal.
