A man on a BMX who twice demanded money from a woman walking in a reserve in Nelson grabbed her bag to see if there was money inside.

The incident occurred just before 9am on Wednesday in the suburb of Stoke.

The man, a Maori aged between 20 and 30, approached the woman as she was walking along the railway reserve and demanded she hand over her money.

She refused and kept walking, but was approached again on Sargeson Street.

The man looked through the contents of her bag before leaving empty-handed.

He was described as having short, dark hair, a clean-cut beard and a moustache.

He was wearing a black hoodie with white writing on it and light-coloured tracksuit pants.

The woman noticed an elderly woman walking along the reserve at the same time who may have seen the incident take place.
