Man jailed over drug-stuffed suitcases

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 16/08/2016

A drug courier who lined suitcases with nearly $10 million of methamphetamine has been jailed after his plan was foiled.

Taiwanese national, 21-year-old Ting-Hsiu Chang will spend 11 years and six months behind bars after being convicted in Manukau District Court in July.

His accomplice, Jen-Wei Chang was earlier jailed for six years and 10 months after pleading guilty in June.

The men were stopped by Customs officials at Auckland Airport in May.

Officers discovered 9.5 kilograms of the drug, worth $9.5 million, stuffed in the lining of four suitcases.

"These drug couriers end up serving time, carrying a conviction for life and bringing shame upon their families back home - the result is never worth the risk," Customs investigations manager Maurice O'Brien said.
