Early investigations in the search is on for a 59-year-old man who failed to check in after a hike in Te Urewera national park suggest that he's left the area.

Police believe the Korean man returned to Wairoa to pick up his belongings and has made his way to Napier.

They are appealing for information on him to confirm his well-being.

He was meant to return from the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk in the North Island park early on Tuesday afternoon, but never checked in.

He was last seen at the Panekiri Hutt but never made it to Onepoto.

His personal details are still being confirmed, but police said he was of medium build and from the Te Urewera or Wairoa area.

He was last seen wearing a blue merino top and light brown pants.
