A 59-year-old man charged with an attack on a young woman in a Riverhead quarry two weeks ago can now be named as Colin Jack Mitchell.

Mitchell pleaded not guilty to three charges in relation to the attack, including abduction, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault with intent to commit sexual violation.

He was arrested at a house in Onehunga on Sunday and appeared in the Auckland District Court on Monday.

He sought bail but was refused and has been remanded in custody, scheduled to next appear in the Auckland District Court on June 21.

The woman he is charged with attacking allegedly woke up in the quarry at Riverhead on the morning of February 26 to find a baseball bat-armed man standing over her, police said.

They said she didn't remember a significant period of time from when she was with her friends in Ponsonby the night before on Saturday until she woke up in the quarry finding she was being attacked.
