Rotorua man Alexander Mowbray is wanted by police after failing to appear in court on a serious assault charge.

Mowbray failed to answer his electronically monitored bail when his name was called at the Rotorua High Court on Wednesday.

Justice Sarah Katz then issued a warrant for his arrest.

Mowbray was allegedly involved in a violent altercation during a drug deal in which salt was substituted for P.

He was to be remanded for another High Court appearance on July 5 to face a charge of assault with intent to rob causing grievous bodily harm at Paradise Valley on the outskirts of Rotorua on October 28 last year.

Mowbray was one of five charged in relation to the alleged offence; one, Joshua Patrick Horman, pleaded guilty to assault and robbery and was jailed for seven and a half years in March.
