Armed police are on patrol near a church in south Auckland where a man has pulled a gun on officers after a car chase.

Police say the driver of the vehicle failed to pull over for a routine stop and led officers on a four-minute pursuit through Otara and Paptoetoe at about 4.40am on Monday.

A short time after police broke off the chase, the vehicle was spotted crashed through the fence of the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Bairds Road.

As officers approach the car, a man, the sole occupant of the vehicle, pointed a gun at them, area commander Inspector Wendy Spiller said.

"The officers withdrew and the man ran from the vehicle."

Despite bringing in a dog unit, police were unable to find the man and say a team of detectives is now working to find him.

Armed officers remain on guard at the scene.

"We have carried out forensic analysis of the vehicle and are awaiting the results," Inspector Spiller said.
