Police are searching for a man they say punched a young boy in the stomach at a Southland primary school on December 3.

The incident occurred at West Gore Primary School where the man approached three boys aged between 7 and 11 who were playing in the grounds on Kitchener Street.

"An altercation has occurred which resulted in the male punching one of the young boys in the stomach," police said in a statement on Thursday.

While officers have spoken to several witnesses, they say more information is needed.

The alleged offender is between 30 to 40-years-old, short to average height and with a stocky build. He has short black hair and a beard and moustache.

He left the scene in what is believed to be a maroon Mitsubishi Chariot.
