A man who called emergency services while inside a car hanging off a cliff in Auckland has been saved - despite his phone running out of battery during the call.

Emergency Services received a call about a vehicle on the edge of a cliff somewhere between Piha and Blockhouse Bay at 11am on Monday.

The caller was still in the car and unsure of where he was, while his phone battery was on its last legs, a Fire Service spokeswoman said.

The caller had no mobile data to use a location service and was sounding his horn continuously while listening for sirens.

The car was found 100m down a bank on Piha Road, near Lone Kauri Road at about 11.20am, moments after the man's phone had died.

Fire crews secured the vehicle before pulling the man out.

A St John's ambulance spokesman said the man was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
