NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 15/04/2016

A 73-year-old tourist has died after being hit by a bus reversing in a carpark at high country station near Queenstown.

The man was visiting Mt Nicholas Station when he was hit early on Friday afternoon.

Tour operator Southern Discoveries suspended its operations until further notice and was supporting the man's wife, who was not travelling with him, chief executive Tim Hunter said.

The man was treated at the scene and was airlifted to Queenstown Hospital where he died, police said.

The station is a family-owned high country property on Lake Wakatipu which supplies merino wool to the Icebreaker clothing company and is open to visitors.

Mr Hunter said the bus was making a slow backing manoeuvre when the accident happened.

Staff were deeply shocked and saddened and were assisting investigations into it, Mr Hunter said.
