A man has been charged with shooting a 49-year-old in the groin in the Christchurch suburb of Hornby.

The 32-year-old is due to appear in Christchurch District Court on Friday accused of shooting a firearm with intent to grievously harm.

The shot was fired around 6.50pm on Thursday, Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam says.

When police arrived at the scene, the 49-year-old man was receiving first aid and is now in hospital where he awaits surgery but does not suffer life threatening injuries, Det Sen Sgt Cottram said.

"We would again like to advise that this is an isolated incident and can assure the public that there is no ongoing risk," he said.

Police are now examining the scene of the shooting.
