A man has survived being shot in the head with a crossbow bolt in southern Wairarapa.

The bolt penetrated the 23-year-old's skull following a confrontation at Kahutara, near Lake Ferry, in the early hours of Sunday, police say.

He was in a serious but stable condition in Wellington Hospital on Monday after initially being treated at Masterton Hospital.

A 21-year-old has been arrested and charged with assault while police investigate. He is due in Masterton District Court on Monday.

"The assault is not gang-related and police are confident there is no ongoing risk to the public," said Detective Senior Sergeant Bysouth.

Police say the victim and two 18-year-olds were confronted by a person they knew when the crossbow was fired.

Police have examined the scene, spoken to several witnesses and say they aren't looking for anyone else.

A crossbow has been recovered.
