Police are seeking a 31-year-old man after a patrol car was struck with a hammer and a person was robbed with a knife in Morrinsville.

They say the man, Conwaye Brown, is subject to an arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on other matters.

The incident happened on Tuesday, when police received reports around 1pm of a man on Coronation Rd brandishing a hammer, acting aggressively to others and trying to hit a passing car.

When an officer arrived at the scene, the offender held the hammer in the air and ran towards the patrol car, acting Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Perry said.

As the officer tried to drive away and call for back-up, the offender struck the driver's side of the car twice.

He then took a knife from his bag and approached a man who had got out of his car to talk to a friend.

He demanded the man's car keys, realised the keys were in the ignition and sped off.

Det Sen Sgt Perry said the officer gave chase, but abandoned the pursuit because of excessive speed.

He said the stolen car, a Ford Falcon XR6 with registration FQJ176, was last seen being driven towards Coromandel.
