A man is in hospital recovering from a stabbing that happened in a Hawke's Bay camping ground.

Police say the 23-year-old was assaulted at the Hastings Top Ten Holiday Park on Sunday and stabbed with a knife.

Detective Sergeant Darren Pritchard says the alleged offender then fled in the victim's vehicle.

The vehicle, a grey Toyota Surf four-wheel-drive, was dumped near the intersection of Albert St and Park Rd in North Hastings about 8am on Sunday.

The weapon used in the attack has not been recovered.

Det Sgt Pritchard said police wanted to hear from witnesses who might have information about the incident.
