An elderly man badly burned in Waikato campervan fire that killed a woman remains in critical condition.

The 72-year-old Opotiki man received burns to more than 50 per cent of his body when the van he was driving caught fire after a crash on State Highway 24, near Matamata on Saturday afternoon.

A woman in the van died in the blaze before firefighters managed to put it out.

Police said the man had been flown to Waikato Hospital and remained in the intensive care unit on Sunday afternoon.

They declined to provide any more details about the accident until investigators completed their inquiry, but said no other vehicles were involved.
