Rescuers are continuing the search for a man missing after his eight-year-old daughter was discovered treading water in Auckland's Manukau Harbour as police piece together what happened.

A drifting, empty 3.6-metre aluminium dinghy was discovered in the harbour on Wednesday afternoon, sparking a search involving four Coastguard vessels, two helicopters and Auckland Airport's rescue hovercraft.

The pair had been fishing and more than two hours later at 7.30pm in darkness, the eight-year-old was found in the water and taken to Middlemore Hospital.

Her rescuers could not see her but found her because she had been calling out, Coastguard spokeswoman Georgie Smith says.

The girl had been in the slightly choppy water for about two hours and separated from her father for about one hour before she was found, she told NZ Newswire.

She was released from hospital overnight, police say.

Senior Constable Garry Larsen said specialist child interviewers were speaking with the girl about what happened.

A Coastguard aeroplane and the police Eagle helicopter are being used in the search for her father as well as the police boat Deodar.
