Police have been alerted after a man tried to lure a pupil away from a Hutt Valley primary school.

In a message to parents, Upper Hutt School principal Jo Grant says the unknown man spoke to the girl near the caretaker's shed in the school grounds on Tuesday afternoon.

He told her: "Your Mum and Dad told me to pick you up."

Ms Grant said the child felt scared and ran to the school gate, where her mother was waiting to pick her up.

She said the school was informed on Wednesday morning.

"We are very concerned about this incident and have spoken to police who are also concerned," she said.

"They are actively supporting and monitoring our school."

Ms Grant said staff had spoken to all children about keeping safe in the school grounds and what to do if a stranger spoke to them.

She assured parents that the school's safety systems and processes were always in place.
