The Red Devils have come away from their trip to Russia with a 1-1 draw against Rostov, while a Mat Ryan-inspired Genk thrashed Gent 5-2.

Manchester United came away from Russian side Rostov with a 1-1 draw while a Mat Ryan-inspired Genk put five past fellow Belgian side Gent to gain the initiative in their Europa League last 16 tie.

While tournament favourites United scored a valuable away goal and are looking comfortable for the return leg, Ryan saved brilliantly from the penalty spot in an action-packed Belgian derby.

Genk raced to a 4-1 half-time lead but the home team sparked a revival as they were the first to score in the second half to make it 4-2.

They threatened to narrow the deficit even further when they were awarded a penalty but the Socceroos gloveman was equal to the task and denied them with a spectacular save.

Genk then pulled away with a 5-2 away win to put them in pole position for the return legs.

In other key ties, French club Lyon downed Roma 4-2 while Anderlecht, Copenhagen and Celta Vigo all registered wins while Schalke 04 drew 1-1 with Monchengladbach.

Premier League side United had to settle for a draw after a first-half goal from Henrikh Mkhitaryan on a well-worn pitch in Rostov.

Mkhitaryan finished from close range after Zlatan Ibrahimovic took a pass from Marouane Fellaini and cut the ball back.

United seemed to be in control but eight minutes after the break were caught out by a long ball which Aleksandr Bukharov chested down before finishing with aplomb past keeper Sergio Romero.

"We have tried to win, we have played as good as we could on this pitch," Mikhitaryan told BT Sport.

"I do not want to speak about the pitch because it was awful for both. For those watching, it was not a very interesting game."

United manager Jose Mourinho told BT Sport: "It was a very good performance in relation to the conditions. It was impossible to play better, impossible to play a passing game.

"We played what the game demanded and we played well. We made one defensive mistake."

The return legs are next Thursday.
