A man who died in Manukau Harbour during a fishing trip has now been named.

William Ruarangi, 52, of Manurewa, went missing in the Manukau Heads last Wednesday, while fishing with his eight-year-old daughter in a 3.6-metre dinghy.

The boat was spotted empty and drifting in the late afternoon, sparking an air and sea search.

The girl was found more than two hours later treading water in the darkness, but there were no signs of her father.

His body was found in Manukau Harbour on Monday.

Social media tributes have poured in from the Cook Island community for "Uncle Willie".
