An Auckland driver has been carjacked and then been run over by the man who stole his vehicle as he fled from police.

The alleged carjacking happened at the intersection of St Lukes and New North Roads on Wednesday morning, police say.

They are now hunting Haumia Manuel, 35, and say he is dangerous and should not be approached.

Around 9am a police van was in the St Lukes area when a stolen car was spotted.

Manuel was believed to be driving the car and ran through a red light before being pursued by the van.

The driver of the stolen vehicle then crashed into another car at the intersection of St Lukes Road and New North Road before getting out of the car and running down the line of waiting traffic attempting to open car doors.

Once he came across a door he was able to open, he threw the driver out and reversed into them while police were chasing on foot.

The person who was hit in the first car was seen to by ambulance but didn't need to go to hospital.

The carjacking victim was shaken and had some cuts and bruises but did not need to go to hospital either, police say.
