Manhunt continues as children returned

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 30/06/2016

Primary school and kindergarten students caught in an armed police cordon in Palmerston North have been reunited with their parents as officers continue a manhunt.

Cordons and road blocks were set up in the suburb of Cloverlea on Thursday after a man fled from police in his car earlier in the morning.

The armed offenders squad was called in to help at about 10.45am and the search was still ongoing at 8pm.

Dozens of students at Cloverlea School and Cloverlea Kindergarten were kept inside after school hours as police carried out a search for the wanted man.

Somerset Crescent School was earlier also placed into lockdown, although it let its students out.

By 7pm the students had been bussed out of the cordon area and hundreds of people gathered at the Highbury Whanau Centre to collect them.

The centre's administrator, Sandra Carroll, told Radio New Zealand it was some of the children's first day at school.

"They're all feeling ok. Just anxious ... It's really busy down here and we're just trying to keep everyone comfortable," she said.
