A man charged over the death of a passenger in his car following a police chase in Porirua will defend a charge of manslaughter next year.

Damian Andrew Lawson, 42, was initially charged with reckless driving causing the death of a woman, whose name is suppressed, following the crash in May.

Still wearing a neck brace for his injuries, Lawson appeared in the High Court at Wellington on Monday, where it was revealed police had laid a manslaughter charge against him.

Lawyer Lucie Scott said Lawson would fight the charge.

A trial date of May 1 was set, with Lawson remanded in custody.

After the crash, police said Lawson had fled a checkpoint and lost control on a bend and his car went through a fence.
