A man charged with the fatal shooting of a two-year-old girl in south Auckland has pleaded not guilty and will stand trial next year.

The 26-year-old was charged with manslaughter and unlawful possession of a pistol after a toddler was found dead with a gunshot wound at a home on Favona Road in Mangere Bridge on June 2.

Appearing in the High Court at Auckland on Wednesday, his lawyer entered not guilty pleas to those charges and another of possession of a cannabis plant for supply.

A three-week trial was set down for May next year and suppression on his name extended until his next appearance.

Police at the time of the death said they had found a shotgun at the scene.

A couple and four children - including the girl - lived at the house and no one else was being sought, they said.

The man, who has been granted bail, will appear again in October.
