The government is looking at further funding for a south Auckland marae that's caring for homeless people.

Te Puea Marae is reported to have sheltered about 60 families and individuals since it opened its doors on May 24.

Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett was asked in parliament on Thursday whether she would help it support the families.

She said MSD staff visited the marae regularly to assess the housing needs of the people there, and Te Puni Kokiri (Ministry of Maori Development) had given it $10,000.

"We are now looking at whether there is something that we can do, if that money is running out, to help them keep going for a bit longer," she said.

Ms Bennett will meet marae chairman Huimoana Dennis to discuss his needs.
