Republican presidential hopeful Marco Rubio said Donald Trump is wrong about who's to blame for the 9/11 attacks.

Trump recently put the spotlight on former President George W. Bush when asked about 9/11, but Rubio said the attacks can be chalked up to mistakes made in former President Bill Clinton's administration.

"The truth is that President George W. Bush inherited all sorts of things from the Clinton Administration," Rubio said in an interview with NewsmaxTV.

"That plot to conduct 9/11, and the steps that it took to bring it about, those began well before he was even sworn into office.  It happened under the watch of President Clinton. In fact, the 9/11 Commission says that," Rubio added. "If you look, all of their recommendations, many of them were about reversing mistakes that were made during the Clinton presidency."

Trump has alleged people in the Bush administration "knew an attack was coming" on 9/11.

"When you talk about George Bush, I mean, say what you want, the World Trade Center came down during his time. ... He was president, OK? Don't blame him or don't blame him, but he was president," Trump told Bloomberg TV.

Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush fired back at the business mogul, saying his brother "kept us safe" after 9/11.
