Mariners let go of three A-League players

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 11/04/2016

Central Coast have started their off-season overhaul, announcing they will not be renewing the contracts Dan Heffernan, Tomislav Uskok and Francesco Stella.

Attacking midfielder Stella, 24, has barely been in Gosford three months having arrived in the January transfer window from the Victorian Premier League, while 24-year-old Uskok earned his first crack at professional football when he signed in November.

Heffernan's signing before the start of the season was a move away from the Mariners' traditional gravitation towards youth, with coach Tony Walmsley giving the 28-year-old rookie a chance but only using him for 209 minutes the entire season.

There could be more changes in the works for this season's wooden-spooners, who will be looking to turn around a horror season in which they won just three matches and notched 13 points.

After Saturday's 4-2 final-round loss to Newcastle, Walmsley pledged to inject his young squad with more experienced players who can lead on the pitch next season.

He conceded that in hindsight he may have exposed some younger players to too much too soon.
