Masterton crash suspect hands himself in

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 18/07/2016

Police say the man suspected of crashing into a Masterton petrol station, hitting a bowser and support beam and causing the forecourt roof to collapse, has handed himself in.

The damage to the Caltex station in High Street happened on Sunday morning.

Before the station crash, police had been chasing a man after he left his home following reports of a disturbance.

It appeared he had misjudged the turn, mounted the kerb, and driven into a petrol bowser and forecourt support beam, police said in a statement.

The crash did not result in any petrol leak.

Police on Monday said a 31-year-old had handed himself in and been charged with failing to stop, dangerous driving and failing to stop and ascertain injury.

He will appear in Masterton District Court on Monday.
