Former All Black Alby Mathewson has gone north after 10 Super Rugby seasons, signing with British club Bristol for the rest of the Northern Hemisphere season.

The Western Force halfback will join the side immediately as they try to climb off the bottom of the Premiership table, following the recent consecutive victories over Worcester and Sale.

The 31-year-old played four Tests for the All Blacks in 2010 and also had stints with the Hurricanes and Blues before leaving for Perth, where he turned out 50 times for the Force. Last year he played for Canterbury in the national provincial competition.

"Alby has vast experience, over 130 Super Rugby caps, so we're looking forward to welcoming him into our environment," said head coach Mark Tainton.

Mathewson will join a Bristol side still desperate to avoid relegation, especially with Pat Lam joining from Connacht as permanent head coach for next season.

"There's a solid plan and structure in place here," Mathewson said. "Bristol know where they need to be and what they need to do to stay up.

"Everybody has bought into that culture and I'm fully committed to playing my part in helping the club achieve their goals this season."
