The man accused of the manslaughter of a homeless man in Hamilton last year will face a one-week jury trial in May.

Neville Harris, 48, entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of causing the death of Tama Retimana when he appeared in the High Court at Hamilton via video link on Tuesday morning.

He was remanded in custody before his trial, which is due to start on May 22.

Mr Retimana's body was discovered by a kayaker in the Waikato River on December 27.

Post-mortem results showed the father-of-two had been assaulted and suffered facial injuries before he drowned.

The 29-year-old had been living in a camp site with his partner at the riverside Pine Beach, off River Road.
