Kiwi surfing pioneer Maz Quinn has ridden his last competitive wave.

Quinn, 40, has announced his retirement from domestic competition, having previously quit the sport internationally.

A four-time national champion, his claim to fame is becoming the first New Zealander to qualify for the elite World Championship Tour, in 2001.

The second was fellow-Gisborne surfer Ricardo Christie in 2015.

Both Kiwis lasted just one year in the top flight.
