Trade Minister Todd McClay is on his way to Washington, New Zealand's first official ministerial visit under the Trump administration.

He will meet the new US Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and key members of Congress.

"I'll be highlighting the strength of our bilateral relationship, the importance of continued New Zealand-US cooperation and leadership on trade in the Asia-Pacific," Mr McClay said before he left on Wednesday night.

"America is a vitally important trading partner for us, worth more than $16 billion in two-way trade. It's our biggest market for beef and wine and our second biggest market for dairy."

Mr McClay first met Mr Lighthizer at APEC in Vietnam, when the invitation to visit Washington was extended.
