McClay to meet UK and EU representatives

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 6/07/2016

Trade Minister Todd McClay will meet British and European representatives this weekend to discuss the implications of Britain's exit from the European Union.

Mr McClay will be at the G20 trade ministers meeting in Shanghai where he has talks lined up with EU Trade Commissioner Cecelia Malmstrom and Lord Price, Britain's Minister of State for Trade and Investment.

"It's an opportunity to talk to them as the implications of the UK's recent referendum vote to leave the European Union are being considered, and to discuss the best way to protect and advance our trade interests," he said.

New Zealand isn't a member of the G20 - a group of large industrialised and developing nations - but has been invited to attend the meeting by host China.

Prime Minister John Key will have informal talks with his outgoing British counterpart, David Cameron, in London next week.

In the aftermath of Brexit Mr Key's trip to the UK and Europe has added importance.

As well as meeting Mr Cameron, Mr Key will have bilateral talks with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in Rome and French President Francois Hollande and Prime Minister Manuel Valles in Paris.
