McCullum continues to shine in IPL

Former Black Caps skipper Brendon McCullum has continued his destructive form with the bat in thumping a 44-ball 72 for Gujurat Lions against Bangalore in Indian Premier League cricket.

McCullum's innings, which included seven sixes and two fours, was ended four balls into the 15th over when he skied Yuzvendra Chahal to fellow Kiwi Adam Milne at deep mid-wicket.

The Daniel Vettori-coached Banglore went on to ease to a 21-run victory, with Gujarat making 192-7 off their 20 overs.

Bangalore's win was set up by an opening 122-run partnership between Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli, the pair anchoring the Royal Challengers to an intimidating 213-2.

Gayle belted 77 from 38 balls, but was given a life after eight overs when he looked to have smashed Ravindra Jadeja for six over long off.

McCullum pulled a spectacular diving catch, but couldn't stop the brim of his floppy hat just touching the boundary marker to give Gayle an invaluable reprieve on 38.

Gujarat prop up the IPL table with one win from five matches, although McCullum has been building form steadily.

In Gujurat's six-wicket loss to Mumbai Indians on Sunday, he hit an up-tempo 64 off 44 balls, adding to his 49 off 32 in the Lions' seven-wicket win over Rising Pune Supergiant two days earlier.

McCullum trails only David Warner (Sunrisers) for the most runs scored, with 225 to the Australian's 235.

The 101-Test New Zealander has hit the most sixes in the competition to date, with 15 to second-placed South African AB de Villiers' 11 (Bangalore).
