McCullum helps Gujarat reclaim IPL lead

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 22/05/2016

Brendon McCullum ended a lean run of form with a sparkling 48 for the Gujarat Lions in a six-wicket win over the Mumbai Indians to guarantee their place in the Indian Premier League knock-out phase.

The retired New Zealand captain had scored a total of 55 runs from his previous six innings but broke the shackles in typical style, swiping eight fours and a six in his 27-ball knock.

It helped Gujarat reach 173-4 with 13 balls to spare in reply to Mumbai's 172 and reclaim top spot on the standings after their 14th and final regular season game.

They can only be surpassed as top qualifiers if Kane Williamson's second-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday.

Defending champions Mumbai drop to fifth and must rely on heavy losses for both Kolkata and Delhi Daredevils - who face Royal Challengers Bangalore - if they are to claim the fourth and final semi-final berth.

Their two New Zealand players had games to forget at Kanpur on Saturday.

Opener Martin Guptill managed only nine while tournament leading wicket-taker Mitchell McClenaghan took 0-38 off 3.5 overs of pace.
