Former Black Caps skipper Brendon McCullum has crafted another lively Indian Premier League innings in a losing cause.

McCullum whacked 64 off 44 balls for the Gujarat Lions in their six-wicket loss to the Mumbai Indians in Mumbai.

Two days after scoring 49 off 32 balls in the loss to the Rising Pune Supergiants, McCullum looked to have done enough to carry struggling Gujarat.

However, competition leaders Mumbai mowed down the visitors' 176-4 with three balls to spare.

On the winning team was Black Caps seamer Mitchell McClenaghan, who claimed 2-24 off his four overs.

McClenaghan is third equal among the competition wicket-takers while McCullum is sixth on the run-scoring list.

Elsewhere, Black Caps speedster Adam Milne made an encouraging debut for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Pune.

Milne's 2-27 included the scalp of Kiwi-born English allrounder Ben Stokes as his last-placed team went down by 27 runs.
