Foreign Minister Murray McCully will soon be on his way to China for talks with his counterpart Wang Yi and senior officials.

He leaves at the weekend and says New Zealand's relationship with China is of "major importance" because two-way trade is worth $22 billion a year.

"This is underpinned by regular political dialogue at all levels," he said.

"The meeting with Minister Wang Yi is an opportunity to discuss a range of issues, including co-operation in the Pacific and matters currently before the United Nations Security council."
